WOW! Where to begin - I guess I could start @ the end & tell you that we had 5 guys & 1 girl in our 3rd season rifle camp & the girl was the one to get an elk - a beautiful 5 x 5, but what is the fun in that! My brother & nephews had been out elk hunting thru Fawn Gulch Outfitters twice before & twice before they asked myself & my boyfriend to come along & we had to bow out as we just couldn't make it work with our busy life. About a year & 1/2 ago I told my brother "If you ever go again count us in - we are going!"

Well...... It was planned for Nov. 2017 and the wait & anticipation was on! It was everything I had anticipated & more! Troy & his whole family & crew are some of the hardest working & most wonderful people I have had the pleasure to meet! They go over & above to provide a 1st class drop camp hunting experience!!

There were 6 of us in our hunting party & we all scouted, tracked & hunted hard every day - we all saw plenty of sign w/ several of the party seeing elk. My magic moment came the last morning, I got up early to go out 1 last time before packing out, donned all my gear , backpack & gun and announced with all the confidence I could muster "TODAY IS THE DAY!" and out the tent flaps I went - enjoying every step I took to get to my spot. Now I hadn't seen an elk to this point, but I saw an amazing amount of sign in all my scouting & as luck would have it this magnificent animal presented himself only 1 hour after I got settled into "my spot" and it was picture perfect!

7:00 A.M. on a bright frosty mountain morning out he walked, 65 yrds from me - a moment I will never forget & a trip, w/all the memories attached, I will always treasure! Thank You Fawn Gulch for your part in making "A DREAM COME TRUE!" I encourage all the girls out there - don't let the boys have all the fun - you get out there and show them how it's done!

Little did I know what I was about to experience! I had never been on an elk hunt...but after much coaxing from my husband, I jumped in head first. Fawn Gulch Outfitters was our obvious choice as my husband and father-in-law each have had several successful hunts with these guys. Our requested guide, Raymond proved to be an amazing choice! As a novice at horseback packing and archery hunting for elk, Raymond, made the experience comfortable. I wanted for nothing! The food, accommodation, advice and entertaining was top notch. I did not expect to be this comfortable! We saw and heard elk bulging each day. The weather was not in our favor this year and I did not harvest an elk. However, the experience I did have was more worth it than the actual kill! Raymond managed to "cow call" two large bulls, one a younger 6 x 6 and the second, a massive older 5 x 5! Shortening the story, I ended up staring down the larger animal at 6 yards while I was in full draw! Unfortunately I didn't feel confident with the angle of the shot and my instincts told me to hold off (and my bow was shaking in fear!). He realized what I was up to and bolted! There was certain opportunity and I would recommend this experience to anyone. The outfit is expertly run from the pack in by horseback, the campsite, the permitted hunting in national forest, knowledgeable guiding and comfortable accommodations!

I would like to thank Troy and the rest of the Fawn Gulch Outfitters Family. This is the only outfitter I've been through and this is the only outfitter I am going to use. I've never seen such a bunch of hard working guys that will go out of their way to make sure you are happy. Very impressed with the effort that they put into their business, yet they still have the time to talk to you and give you tips and strategies on how to go about your hunt. I was very impressed on how well his horses and mules were to use. I am not experienced in riding horses and they were very user friendly. This is a top notch outfitter and highly recommend going through Troy and the boys. I can't wait for my next hunt with them.

Just wanted you to know that the "Bertus Boy" successfully made it back from our elk hunting experience in Colorado. It was a long day of getting up early, an early morning hunt, packing, loading up the elk and packing out, packing the car and driving all Sunday night back to Nebraska and South Dakota. Jim and Jerre went to work on Monday afternoon and I had things to do to get ready for my trip to Connecticut on Tuesday. Needless to say, we all slept pretty good Monday night and have since recovered quit nicely. Hope you and the extended family had a great Thanksgiving celebration. It sounded like a good time. You should be quit proud of your sons especially Cord and Spur. They truly epitomize the term "Nice Gentleman" and it was a pleasure getting reacquainted with them on our trip out of the mountains. They were extremely helpful and exhibit all of the qualities that a father would like to see in his sons. Thanks so much for getting us out on Sunday as I know that was not in your original plans. It was much appreciated.

As luck would have it, I was blessed by the Lord to have been fortunate enough to get an elk - again. No hunting skill involved just as case of opportunity crossing paths with preparation and being at the right place at the right time. I had hoped that Jim and Jerre would have had the same opportunity this time around but it just wasn't to be - at least this time. Maybe next time, if we are still able to tromp through the dead falls of the dark woods.

A guided mountain horseback elk hunt has been on the top of my bucket list for years. I am a sixty four years old and having not experienced such a hunt, I spent a lot of time picking an outfitter that I felt would best suit me. I ended up picking Troy Ross's Fawn Gulch Outfitters for many reasons. Other hunters I talked to had nothing but good things to say about Troy Ross and his family run outfitting service. I was told of an outfitter that was honest and had hard working guides, clean camps, well trained horses, good food, an abundance of game, and unbelievable scenery. Well let me tell you everything was true and then some!! I had one of the best experiences of my life on this hunt. Even if I had not gotten my 6x6 trophy bull, I still would have said these same words. Thank you Troy Ross and Family!! You are an A-1 outfitter!!!

In the fall of 2015, Troy and Fawn Gulch Outfitters, put us four Texans in some of the most beautiful elk country imageable. From the time we started up the mountain on horses, we knew we were in for a special adventure. We arrived at the camp fully equipped with everything Troy said would be there and lots more. We needed nothing else for a comfortable hunt. We were not far outside of Pagosa Springs, headed back to Texas, when we started planning our hunt for the 2016 season with Fawn Gulch Outfitters. Our family had two experience hunters, a new hunter and three adventurous women in group. From getting to the hunting spot before down until we watched the embers grow dim on the bonfire each night, our days were filled with good times surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The camp was well equipped with amenities to keep us warm, fed and watered. After long days of hiking, the folding chairs and new cots were a treat each night. Although we didn’t tag an elk, we had a great time in this wilderness and have many stories to share for years to come.

We would like to thank you and your family for the professionalism you showed us during our recent elk hunt. Even though the weather was a challenge for all of us, you went out of your way to make us feel comfortable throughout the experience. My Son and I would like to thank you for a successful hunt. It was our first time Elk hunting and we both killed a bull elk. We either heard elk or saw elk every day of our hunt, 3rd Rifle Season 2013.

We want you to know that the camp was prime location. Very comfortable and had everything that we needed plus more. The hunt was all you said it would be, and the camp. We both killed our Bulls within ¼ to ½ mile from camp. Thanks for the trip of a lifetime.
